The weather forecast is set for another week of hot, possibly record-breaking temperatures by day and night. We all need to take care – especially being in the sun during the day – but we also need to make sure that the more vulnerable members of our community are looked out for.

The following is an extract from information sent by Steve Eason-Harris, the Emergency Planning & Business Continuity Officer at Lincolnshire County Council, with some helpful ideas and guidelines to stay safe and healthy in the continuing heat:

“…The Met Office has issued an AMBER alert for hot weather for the East Midlands. Temperatures will be hot and humid throughout the daytime. Thresholds are increasingly likely to be exceeded throughout this period, and staying above overnight thresholds leading to uncomfortable sleeping conditions. 

You are advised to check on elderly and/or vulnerable neighbours/residents to ensure they have the right guidance and support during this time. 

If possible stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm however this is not always possible so please take precautions:

  • Walk in the shade and apply sunscreen and wear a hat and light scarf to avoid over exposure to the sun
  • Avoid extreme physical exertion
  • Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothing

Cool yourself down

  • Have plenty of cold drinks
  • Eat cold foods particularly those with high water content (salads and fruits)
  • Take cool showers, baths or body washes
  • Sprinkle water over skin or clothing, keep damp clothing around your neck 

Keep your environment cool

  • Keep living spaces cool especially important for the elderly, vulnerable or young
  • Keep winds that are exposed to direct sunlight closed during the day and open windows at night when temperatures reduce
  • Close curtains  that receive morning sunshine or again in the afternoon to reduce rooms from over heating
  • Keep indoor plans and bowls of water in the house as evaporation helps cool the air

Keep medications below 25 degrees centigrade

If you or others feel unwell

  • Try to get help if you or others feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst, headache, move to a cooler place as soon as possible and measure you body temperature
  • Drink some water or fruit juice to rehydrate
  • Rest immediately in a cooler environment if you have painful muscular spasms (particularly in the arms, legs or abdomen, in many cases after sustained exercise during very hot weather), and drink oral hydrations solutions containing electrolytes
  • Medical attentions is needed if heat cramps last more than an hour
  • Consult your doctor if you feel unusual symptoms or if symptoms persist

Anglian Water has provided the following tips to saving water:

1.       Stay hydrated – leave a jug of tap water in the fridge to cool down rather than running the tap to get it cold.

2.       To stay cool dampen a flannel and put it in the fridge

3.       Dab cold water from the fridge on your wrists, ankles and temples.

4.       Learn to love your brown lawn – leave the sprinkler in the shed this summer, it’s one of the biggest water guzzlers! Grass is extremely hard to kill. Your lawn will soon bounce back and be vibrant and green again, come the autumn.

5.       Water plants late at night when it’s cool. The water is less likely to evaporate and will do most good. Watering in the heat of the day is not advised as it can scorch and kill your plants.

6.       If you’ve already filled the paddling pool for the day, don’t empty it! You can save loads on your water bill by using gentle disinfectant tablets that keep the paddling pool water fresh for days of use and fun with the kids.  Or use the water to wash the car on water the flower beds.

7.       Or forget the paddling pool completely and head to the beach. In the East of England we have some of the best beaches in the country and many have been awarded Blue Flags and Seaside Awards.  There’s even a beach and swimming area at our water park in Rutland, opening for the school summer holidays.

8.       Take a shorter shower or a shallower bath. Just a minute less in the shower can save as much as £50 a year on your water bill. We all take a shower or a bath so this is one of the easiest tips for everyone to get involved in.

9.       Fix that dripping tap. Dripping taps are just money running down the drain. If your tap dripped every second, all day, it would waste around 17 litres in just 24hours! That’s over 6000 litres and around £30 a year.

10. Check your local forecast. If it’s going to rain tomorrow don’t water the plants.
